Scientists in England just conducted a study with high-speed cameras to figure out what causes the dripping sound from a leaky tap. It's not the drop hitting the surface of the water . . . it's a little air bubble that forms and then pops quickly when the drop hits. They say you can almost get rid of the sound completely by adding dish soap to the water under the drip. Or you could just fix the faucet.
