The New York Jets reportedly "taking calls" on wide receiver Davante Adams but will release him if they can't find a trade partner, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported on Sunday (March 2).
"Sources: The #Jets are now taking calls on star WR Davante Adams, open to trading him prior to the start of the league year. No surprise with his $38.2M cap number. If they can’t get a deal, they are expected to release Adams, who could rejoin QB Aaron Rodgers with a new team," Rapoport wrote on his X account.
The Jets' reported decision comes weeks after the team had formally announced it was moving on from quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
Adams, 32, spent his first eight NFL seasons as Rodgers' teammate with the Green Bay Packers and was acquired by the Jets in a mid-season trade with the Las Vegas Raiders. The former All-Pro recorded a combined 85 receptions for 1,063 yards and eight touchdowns in 14 games during the 2024 season and has exceeded 1,000 receiving yards during six of the last seven seasons.
On Friday (February 28), the New York Giants were reported to have shifted their focus on Rodgers, 41, or another veteran quarterback after Matthew Stafford's decision to remain with the Los Angeles Rams as part of a reworked contract. The four-time NFL MVP has spent the past two seasons with the Jets, who share MetLife Stadium with the Giants, and went 6-12 in 18 starts during the past two seasons, having been limited to just one game in 2023 due to a season-ending Achilles injury in Week 1.
