Primary Election Day In North Carolina

(Raleigh, NC) -- It's Election Day in North Carolina, voters will narrow the field for everything from Congress to local prosecutors. The Republican race for U.S. Senate is probably the most high profile race on the ballot, as three Republicans are trying to replace Senator Richard Burr. The winner of that race needs at least 30 percent of the vote today to avoid a runoff in July. Polls across the state are open from 6:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. Election managers say voter ID is not required to vote today.

Duke Energy Wants Four More Years To Meet Zero-Emission Goals

(Raleigh, NC) -- Duke Energy is asking state regulators for more time to meet its zero-emission goals. The company yesterday filed a plan with the North Carolina Utilities Commission, asking for four more years. Duke says another four years will give it time to get off-shore wind, nuclear, and hydro-electric power plants online. Governor Cooper last year signed a new state law that requires Duke and other utilities in the state to cut emissions by 70% in the next eight years, and be carbon-neutral by 2050.

Manhunt Underway For Suspect In Fayetteville Double Murder

(Fayetteville, NC) -- Police in Fayetteville are looking for a suspect in connection to a double murder. The killings happened yesterday at an apartment complex on Fayetteville's west side. One person was found shot to death inside an apartment, another was found dead in the backyard. Authorities focused their search for their suspect, 29-year-old Rhaim Santiago, at a different apartment complex in Selma. Investigators say the killings do not appear to be random, and they believe that another person may have been involved in the case as well.

Asheville Police Looking Into Body Found In River Arts District

(Asheville, NC) -- Police in Asheville are calling the death of a young man in the city's River Arts District suspicious. Officers found the still-unidentified man yesterday afternoon in a creek in a wooded area. Investigators say the death is suspicious because of the man's age, where he died, and that he is new to the Asheville-area. An autopsy is scheduled in the case.

StarMed To Give Out Free Baby Formula Today

(Charlotte, NC) -- One local health care group is helping parents affected by the nationwide baby formula shortage. StarMed says they will give out about 300 cannisters of formula today from Gerber, Similac, and Nestle. They will start handing out the formula at noon at their east and west locations in Charlotte. The formula will be distributed on a first come, first served basis.

Gastonia Shooting Leaves One Dead, Another Injured

(Gastonia, NC) -- One person is dead and another injured following a shooting in Gastonia. Officials say it happened just after 12:30 p.m. yesterday in the 600 block of Westwood Circle. Nineteen-year-old Deionte Sparkman was pronounced dead at the scene. Another 19-year-old male sustained serious injuries. Four people were also injured over the weekend in Gastonia in separate shooting incidents.

Two-Year-Old Critical After Being Struck By Car

(Lincoln County, NC) -- A two-year-old is critically injured after walking into a road in Lincoln County. North Carolina State Patrol was called to a church parking lot on N-C 16 Business near Mundy Road in Denver early Sunday afternoon. They say the child was not under full supervision and walked into oncoming traffic. No charges have been filed against the driver.

Jury Selection Underway In Joshua Lee Burgess Murder Trial

(Union County, NC) -- The murder trial of Joshua Lee Burgess is underway in Union County. Jury selection began yesterday. Burgess is accused of murdering his 15-year-old daughter, Zaria, back in August 2019. Officials say the 32-year-old confessed to the crime. Burgess is also facing charges of statutory rape, kidnapping, and sexual exploitation of a minor.

Charlotte Officer Dies Unexpectedly

(Charlotte, NC) -- A Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer has passed away unexpectedly. Authorities announced yesterday that Officer Angela Starnes died at her home. She was a member of the homicide unit. The cause of death has not been released.

Raleigh Firefighters Worry About Loses With Raises

(Raleigh, NC) -- Raleigh firefighters are worried they will lose more crewmen if the city doesn't kick-in for larger raises. Firefighters in the city are in-line for a two percent raise this year, but local Teamster's Vice President Rick Armstrong says that's not enough to keep-up with inflation. Armstrong said there are 168 open firefighter jobs in Raleigh right now. He said firemen are leaving for jobs in other communities where they can make more.

Suspect Accused In Shooting Deaths Of Johnston County Couple Still On The Run

(Johnston County, NC) -- Authorities in Johnston County are asking the public for help in locating a suspect wanted in connection with the shooting deaths of two people Monday morning. 29-year old Rhaim Mosies Santiago, is charged with two counts of first degree murder, one count of second degree kidnapping and one count of attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon. Investigators say Santiago fatally shot 27-year old Nakea Brooks and 33-year old Marchellous Braddy at a home on Aftonshire Drive in Fayetteville. Santiago, who is still on the run, is to be considered armed and dangerous. Late Monday, police recovered a Toyota Camry in Smithfield believed to have been used as a getaway vehicle.

Voters Casting Ballots Across North Carolina Today In Primary Elections

(Raleigh, NC) -- As voters go to the polls today to cast ballots in Republican and Democratic primaries, a new report released Monday showed a record number of North Carolinians voted early this year. State election officials reported that between April 28th and May 14th, more than 576-thousand voters cast ballots during the early voting period. That compared to just 295-thousand four years ago. The vast majority used One Stop Early Voting at sites across the state. The polls will be open today from 6:30 am until 7:30 pm.

Raleigh Police And Firefighters Demanding Pay Raises In Today's Budget To Be Unveiled Today

(Raleigh, NC) -- A final draft of the City of Raleigh's 2023 operating budget will be presented at the City Council meeting today. Police and firefighters are hoping it will include more than just a two-percent pay raise approved last month for all employees. First responders are demanding they be paid a livable wage in order to keep from moving to other cities that pay higher salaries. Police and firefighters are planning a demonstration outside City Hall today before the start of the Council meeting.

Wake County School Board To Vote On Increasing The Price Of Student Meals Today

(Wake County, NC) -- The Wake County Board of Education is expected to take up a vote today on a resolution that would increase the amount that students would have to pay for meals. Under the proposal, the price for breakfast and lunches would be raised by 25-cents. If approved, elementary and middle school students would pay an even three-dollars per meal. High school students would pay three-25.

U.S. Fish And Wildlife Service Offering Reward For Person Who Shot And Killed Red Wolf

(Raleigh, NC) -- The federal government is offering a five-thousand dollar reward for information leading the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the recent shooting death of a red wolf. The carcass of the red wolf, which is on the endangered species list in North Carolina, was found in a field in Tyrell County on April 15th. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says the animal had been shot in spine. Killing of red wolves are illegal in North Carolina, except for under special circumstances where livestock have been attacked.

Canes Take On Rangers In Second Round Of Playoffs Tomorrow Night

(Raleigh, NC) -- Tomorrow night at PNC Arena, the Carolina Hurricanes will face off against the New York Rangers to begin the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The two teams have already met four times in the regular season with the Canes coming away victorious in three. In a unusual twist of fate, Carolina enters the seven game series with six players who used to play for the Rangers, including goalie Antti Raanta, who started six of the seven games against Boston in the first round. The experts have the Canes as a slight favorite to win the entire second round.
