(Boone, NC) -- Park Service officials are investigating a death on the Blue Ridge Parkway. A man was found dead below the Yadkin Valley Overlook in the Blowing Rock area early Saturday afternoon. There's no word yet on a suspected cause of death. The SBI is helping in the investigation.

Asheville Educators Concerned Over Potential Hiring Freeze

(Asheville, NC) -- A recommended hiring freeze is causing concern among some Asheville teachers. A consulting group put forward the suggestion last week, in addition to possible consolidation of city schools and programs. The president of the Asheville City Association of Educators told WLOS-TV he has concern that a hiring freeze will only make financial issues in the system worse. He said some staff is already leaving due to pay and workloads.

New Details In Pastor's Child Sex Crime Allegations

(Black Mountain, NC) -- More details are coming out in the case of a former mountain pastor charged with child sex crimes. Trent Holbert was arrested earlier this year for indecent liberties with a child and statutory sex offense. New warrants obtained by WLOS-TV allege Holbert befriended a 15-year-old's parents while he groomed the victim. He also offered up a bedroom in his home for the teen because her parents had limited means. Holbert resigned from his position at The Ridge Church in Black Mountain.

Pumpkin Fest Underway In Brevard

(Brevard, NC) -- A celebration of the season is underway in Brevard. The Pumpkin Fest at Silvermont Park started back up over the weekend after missing out last year due to the coronavirus pandemic. Visitors are welcome to come out for the remaining weekends of the month to catch some music, pumpkin displays, games and more. The event serves as a fundraiser for the advocate group Friends of Silvermont.

New Homes On Display In Annual Asheville Event

(Asheville, NC) -- Tours will continue this weekend for the annual Parade of Homes in Asheville. The event kicked off Saturday for the 40th time. The parade features three-dozen newly-constructed homes. More than a dozen are open for physical tours, as long as visitors wear face masks.

Western Carolina Football Remains Winless

(Cullowhee, NC) -- Western Carolina's football team is still looking for its first win of the season. The Catamounts fell 34-to-24 at home to Mercer on Saturday. The game was tied in the fourth-quarter until Mercer pulled away with around nine-minutes left. Western Carolina is idle this weekend.

Two Dead In Charlotte Homicides

(Charlotte, NC) -- The CMPD is investigating two weekend homicides. Officers found a man shot to death in a south Charlotte business park on Southern Loop Boulevard late Saturday night. A second person was found dead on Flat River Drive in the University City area last night. No arrests have been announced in either case.

UNCC Classes Canceled For Wellness Day

(Charlotte, NC) -- Classes are canceled at UNC-Charlotte tomorrow. The chancellor says Tuesday will be a "Wellness Day" in order to address mental health across the campus. He's encouraging students to rest and check in with a fellow classmate or friend. A mental health summit is also planned at the school later this month.

Wrong-Way Wreck Kills Four On I-77

(York County, SC) -- The highway patrol is investigating a wreck that killed four people in York County. Troopers say two cars collided when one was traveling in the wrong direction on I-77 early Sunday morning. One of the victims was a six-year-old child. The suspected wrong-way driver was taken to the hospital for injuries.

Panthers Drop Second Straight To Eagles

(Charlotte, NC) -- The Panthers are looking for a win next weekend after dropping two consecutive games. Philadelphia came back from 12-points down to defeat Carolina 21-to-18 at Bank of America Stadium yesterday. Both teams were held to under 300-yards. The Panthers will stay at home to host Minnesota early Sunday afternoon.

Three Suspects Arrested In NE Charlotte Homicide

(Charlotte, NC) -- Three suspects are facing charges in a northeast Charlotte homicide. A 19-year-old was shot to death at Farmington Ridge Parkway and Caldwell Road in University City nearly a week ago. The CMPD says a 20-year-old and two teens have since been arrested for murder.

Charlotte Renaissance Festival Underway

(Huntersville, NC) -- The Charlotte Renaissance Festival is underway again. The 28th annual event was canceled last year due to the coronavirus pandemic. Attractions and entertainment are underway every weekend through November 21st. Face masks are required in indoor areas.

UNC Chapel Hill Declares "Wellness Day", Cancels Classes In Response To Two Recent Suicides

(Chapel Hill, NC) -- All classes have been cancelled at UNC Chapel Hill tomorrow. This, in response to two students reportedly committing suicide on the campus within the last month. In a written statement, UNC Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz said Sunday, that the so called "wellness day" is being called because the University is in a "mental health crisis". The action comes as newly released data showed that in North Carolina, 1-point-4 million adults have been diagnosed with a mental health condition. The report from the National Alliance of Mental Illness also said nearly 340-thousand children in North Carolina are dealing with mental health issues.

Anti-Discrimination Ordinances Against LGBTQ Community To Be Considered By Wake County And City Of Raleigh

(Wake County, NC) -- This week, both the Wake County Commission and the Raleigh City Council are scheduled to take up proposed new anti-discrimination ordinances aimed at increasing protections for members of the LGBTQ community. If approved, the protections would include restaurants and hotels, as well as individual veteran, marital and pregnancy status, religious beliefs, disability, or natural hair styles. Bathrooms and locker rooms would not be subject to new ordinances because they are still under state jurisdiction. The proposal goes before the Wake County Commission today and the Raleigh City Council tomorrow.

LGBTQ Protest Planned Outside The Offices Of Lt. Governor Mark Robinson Today

(Raleigh, NC) -- Later today, LGBTQ faith leaders will hold a news conference outside the offices of Lt. Governor Mark Robinson. The event comes in response to comments Robinson made at a church four months ago surfaced on social media last week. During the speech, Robinson called the teaching about homosexuality and transgenderism "filth". Since the video was posted, several activists groups, as well as members of the North Carolina General Assembly, have called for Robinson to resign.

U.S. Justice Department To Host Meeting In Fayetteville On Proposed Repurposing Of The Market House

(Fayetteville, NC) -- A U.S. Department of Justice official will be in Fayetteville tomorrow to facilitate a full day of discussions about repurposing the Market House. The controversial structure, built in the 1830's, was once the site where African slaves were bought and sold. The session, which will not be open to the public, will be held at Methodist University. The Justice Department will get feedback from a diverse group of community leaders formed by the Fayetteville-Cumberland Human Relations Commission. A second event will be scheduled for early 2022.

Fayetteville Shooting And Vehicle Crash Kills Two, Seriously Injures One

(Fayetteville, NC) -- A shooting and car crash in Fayetteville over the weekend, left two people dead and one seriously injured. It happened around 3:am Sunday along Gillespie Street near Owen Drive. Authorities say after an exchange of gunfire, a collision between two vehicles occurred. The victims, identified as 19-year old Joshua Reddick and 18-year old Devon Hargrove were pronounced dead at the scene. Police say a third person in the car suffered severe injuries from the crash. Woman Shot While Sleeping In Winston-Salem

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- Winston-Salem police are investigating after a woman was shot multiple times in her home. Police say the victim was sleeping when she was shot several times in the leg and torso early Sunday morning. She is expected to be okay. Police are looking for a dark-colored vehicle seen parked outside the woman's home on Beth Avenue. Anyone with information is urged to come forward.

Elderly Danville Woman Found Dead In Home

(Danville, VA) -- Danville police are investigating after an elderly woman was found dead in her home. Eighty-eight-year-old Elizabeth Adkins was found dead in her home on Juless Street yesterday morning. Police are investigating the case as a homicide. The did not release any further information. Woman Hit, Killed Along Business 85 In High Point

(HIgh Point, NC) -- High Point police do not plan on filing charges against the driver who hit and killed a woman along Business 85. The accident happened Saturday night, near the I-74 interchange. Police say Charmaine Bostick was arguing with someone in her car when she pulled over, got out and was hit by a passing motorist. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver that hit her was not hurt.

Suspect ID'd In Attempted Murder Of Woman In Eden

(Eden, NC) -- Police are identifying the person who tried to kill a woman in Eden. Officers were called to the 200-block of Mill Avenue early Saturday morning about a suspicious person. Angela Williams was found suffering a gunshot wound. Officers identified 56-year-old Donald Newman as the suspect and determined the incident was domestic. They say he had an outstanding domestic violence protective order at the time. He's now facing burglary and attempted murder charges.
