Brevard public works director indicted on federal charges

Brevard's director of public works has been indicted on federal charges related to hazardous waste.

A grand jury returned a criminal indictment, charging David Lutz with environmental crimes related to the handling, transportation and storage of hazardous waste in May of 2016.

Federal authorities said Lutz had public works employees dig up soil from the back of the city's firing range. They said Lutz knew the soil was hazardous from lead contamination, but he still had workers handle it without safety gear and had it stored at the department's headquarters.
