(Haywood County, NC) -- Haywood County commissioners are voting today on a resolution over gun rights. The board is considering a resolution declaring Haywood as a 'Constitution Protecting County.' The measure comes as a growing number of governments are passing largely symbolic measures supporting the right to own firearms. Thomas Howell told WLOS-TV that certain people shouldn't be allowed to own guns, including those who are dealing with mental issues. He is the father of Riley Howell, who died in a shooting on the UNC Charlotte campus last year.

Pisgah Pete Predicts More Winter

(Brevard, NC) -- It's six more weeks of winter, according to Pisgah Pete. The famed white squirrel made his prediction in downtown Brevard yesterday. It was part of the White Squirrel Day celebration, which helps raise money for local wildlife rehab efforts. Pisgah Pete also incorrectly predicted San Francisco to win last night's Super Bowl.

Buncombe Commissioner Dies At 72

(Buncombe County, NC) -- The Buncombe County community is mourning the loss of a county commissioner. Family members say Mike Fryar died at Mission Hospital in Asheville yesterday at the age of 72. Fryar served district two since 2012 and lived in Buncombe County of 55 years. County manager Avril Pinder said he leaves a legacy of having an unwavering dedication of making life better for everyone.

Murder Trial Begins In Buncombe County

(Buncombe County, NC) -- Another murder trial is expected to begin in Buncombe County court today. Timothy Gallion is accused of shooting a friend to death in Barnardsville nearly three years ago. The district attorney's office is handling another murder case at the same time. Brenda McCutcheon is on trial for allegedly killing her husband, plastic surgeon Buddy McCutcheon, in their Arden home in 2016.

NC Senators Vote To Block Witnesses

(Washington, DC) -- The U.S. Senate is slated to make a decision in President Trump's impeachment trial. North Carolina Republican Senators Thom Tillis and Richard Burr voted on Friday to block the calling of witnesses, which passed 51-to-49 and most likely means the trial will now end on Wednesday in an acquittal. Closing arguments are expected today, followed by speeches from the senators. Tillis said the Democrats have a weak case and it's time for the Senate to vote to acquit the President.

Company Adding 70 Jobs

(Buncombe County, NC) -- A Buncombe County manufacturing company is adding close to 70 jobs. Nypro said on Friday it plans to invest close to 19-million-dollars in an expansion of its facility in the Vista Industrial Park. The money will also go towards new machinery and technology. The new jobs at the healthcare plastics plant range from engineering and production to management.

Trump To Visit North Carolina This Week

(Charlotte, NC) -- President Trump is coming to North Carolina this week. Trump will visit the North Carolina Opportunity Now summit in Charlotte on Friday. He's also scheduled to speak at a fundraising committee dinner. The visit will cap a busy week for the President. He's giving his State of the Union address Tuesday evening, and on Wednesday, the Senate is expected to vote to acquit him of impeachment charges of abusing power and obstructing Congress.

Bomb Threat Triggers Garner Walmart Evacuation

(Garner, NC) -- A bomb threat forced the evacuation of a Walmart in Garner on Sunday afternoon. Garner Police say an employee took a call around 3:45 p.m. and was told there was a bomb in the store on Fayetteville Road. The store was closed and the parking lot was blocked off for more than two hours while police went through the building. The building was cleared and employees began working to reopen the store a little after 6 p.m.

Man Shot On I-440

(Raleigh, NC) -- A man who was shot more than once is being treated after he was shot while driving on I-440 early Sunday morning. Raleigh Police say the man walked into a hospital just before 3 a.m. and said he'd been shot while driving east on I-440 near Capital Boulevard. His injuries are not life-threatening and detectives are asking anyone with information to call Raleigh CrimeStoppers.

Hundreds Line Up For Real IDs in Durham

(Durham, NC) -- Hundreds of people lined up to apply for Real IDs over the weekend in Durham. The wait at the Durham DMV was about two-and-a-half hours for the first of 12 Real ID express days around the state. Starting October 1st, people will need a Real ID, passport, or military ID to travel plane, and to enter federal buildings. Three more 12 Real ID express days are scheduled in the Triangle, in Garner on April 18th and in Raleigh on April 25th and May 9th, or you can apply at any DMV office during regular business hours.

Transportation Open House In Durham This Week

(Durham, NC) -- The NC Department of Transportation wants to hear from people about which Triangle projects they want funded over the next ten years. The DOT is inviting people to a three-day open house at DOT's Five headquarters in Durham Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday to share input in person. You can get a look at potential projects in Wake, Durham, Franklin, Person, Granville, Vance, and Warren counties and talk with NCDOT staff.

NC Man Dies In Greensboro Crash

(Greensboro, NC) -- A Sophia man is dead after a bad wreck in Greensboro. Police say Charles Brown lost control of his Dodge Charger, jumped a median, crashed through a fence, and then hit several parked cars. The accident happened early Saturday morning along U.S. 29, near O'Henry Boulevard. Brown was taken to the hospital where he later died. An investigation is underway.

Business 40 Opens Ahead Of Schedule

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- The new Salem Parkway is open about six months ahead of schedule. The road, which used to be known as Business 40, opened yesterday morning. State transportation officials say although Salem Parkway is now open to traffic, the full construction project won't be complete for several more months.

Greensboro Businesses Robbed At Gunpoint

(Greensboro, NC) -- Greensboro police are investigating a string of robberies over the weekend. Razor Line Barbershop on West Gate City Boulevard was robbed at gunpoint early Sunday morning, and two men left with an undisclosed amount of cash. Attempted robberies happened just a few hours earlier at the Family Dollar on East Cone Boulevard and McDonald's on West Gate City Boulevard. Police have not said whether the crimes are related. An investigation is ongoing.

Thousands Honor NC Army Specialist Killed In Syria

(Wilmington, NC) -- Thousands of mourners turned out in Wilmington Saturday to honor a hometown hero killed in Syria. The Defense Department says 22-year-old Army Specialist Antonio Moore was killed in a rollover accident while conducting route-clearing operations in Syria last month. Residents lined the procession route as Moore's flag-draped coffin was transported from the Wilmington airport to a funeral home. Moore was deployed to Syria as part of Operation Inherent Resolve, which was his first deployment.

Asheboro Man Facing Sex Offense Charges

(Greensboro, NC) -- An Asheboro man is under arrest on child sex offense charges. David Cleaver was taken into custody Wednesday in Greensboro. He's charged with first-degree sexual offense of a victim under 13 and taking indecent liberties with children. Police say the incidents happened in 2011 and 2012 in Rowan County. They say Cleaver was a family friend.
