One Dead In West Asheville Homicide

(Asheville, NC) -- A homicide is being investigated in west Asheville. An 18-year-old man was shot to death on Fayetteville Street early Monday morning. Investigators say a person of interest barricaded himself in a home next-door for several hours. Officers deployed several rounds of gas inside to force him to come out. No charges have been announced.

New Police Chief Named In Asheville

(Asheville, NC) -- The city of Asheville has a new police chief. City Manager Debra Campbell announced on Monday that David Zack has been hired as the successor to short-lived chief Chris Bailey, who stepped down in the fall. Zack has most recently served as police chief in Cheektowaga, New York. He was credited for creating a Fair and Impartial Police Training Program and Crisis Intervention Teams.

Rain Continues To Threaten WNC

(Asheville, NC) -- Rain is continuing to affect western North Carolina. The National Weather Service is calling for as much as two additional inches of rain through tomorrow. Minor flooding is possible in areas that have already been saturated by rain. A flood advisory is in effect for the French Broad River near Fletcher.

Two Dogs Found Dead In Trash Bags

(Yancey County, NC) -- Yancey County sheriff's officials are investigating the deaths of two dogs. WLOS-TV says they were found in two trash bags near the South Toe River on Friday. The owners of one of the dogs was contacted through microchip information, and they said the puppy had been missing for days. The Humane Society is offering up to a 26-hundred-dollar reward for information.

Transylvania Residents Protest New Dollar General

(Transylvania County, NC) -- Some residents in Transylvania County want "no Dollar in the Hollar." WLOS-TV reports that last night's county commission meeting was overflowing with protesters against a proposed Dollar General site on Highway 276 near Brevard. Some opponents feel there's already enough Dollar Generals in the area, while others are concerned the development will be flooded due to the location.

Public Input Needed For Wilderness Trail

(Rutherfordton, NC) -- The public has a chance to weigh in on a plan for 100 new miles of trail in western North Carolina. The state parks and rec division has drawn up the proposed corridor for the Wilderness Gateway State Trail, which will run from Chimney Rock State Park to South Mountains State Park in Burke County. The feasibility study is available to view on a drop-in basis at the Rutherford County Administration Office from five to seven tonight.

Second Rowan Teacher Accused Of Exchanging Sexual Images

(Rowan County, NC) -- Another Rowan County middle school teacher is accused of exchanging sexual pictures with a student. Justin Andrew Avery became the second teacher at West Rowan Middle to face those allegations when he was arrested on Sunday. Ethan Andrew Grose was first arrested last month for exploitation and indecent liberties, but since quit his teaching position. The Rowan Salisbury School District is encouraging families to talk with their children about safety and to contact the sheriff's office if they have any information.

CMPD: Two Found In Car Were Shot To Death

(Charlotte, NC) -- The CMPD says two people found dead in an SUV were shot to death. A resident found the vehicle down an embankment on Atando Avenue in north Charlotte on Saturday morning. The victims were identified as 35-year-olds Siojvon Joseph and Asa Shannon. A reward of up to five-thousand-dollars is being offered for information in the case.

Couple Dead In Apparent Murder-Suicide

(York County, NC) -- York County deputies are investigating an apparent murder-suicide. A husband and wife were both found dead at a home on Turkey Creek Ridge Road near McConnells Monday. The man allegedly shot the woman before turning the gun on himself.

State Board Approves Huntersville Charter School Application

(Charlotte, NC) -- A state board is approving a charter school plan in Huntersville. WBTV says the Charter Schools Advisory Board gave the thumbs up yesterday for the creation of Huntersville Charter High School. The application states that the primary group of students for the school are from North Mecklenburg. Around 25 acres has reportedly been secured for the high school around Hambright and Beatties Ford Road. The state Board of Education must give final approval.

Teen Arrested For Gas Station Armed Robbery

(Charlotte, NC) -- A teen is accused of a gas station armed robbery in east Charlotte. The CMPD says a 15-year-old held up the BP on Cambridge Commons Drive early Sunday morning. An employee was injured when the suspect shot his gun several times inside the store. The boy was arrested less than ten minutes later.

Cam Wins Charity Challenge

(Charlotte, NC) -- Cam Newton is the winner of an annual charity challenge in the NFL. The league recognized the Panthers' QB for his off-the-field work by naming him the Walter Payton Man of the Year Charity Challenge Winner yesterday. A 25-thousand-dollar check from the NFL and Nationwide is now going towards the Cam Newton Foundation. Cam is a finalist for the Walter Payton Award, which will be awarded on February 1st.

Johnston County School Board Names New Interim Superintendent

(Smithfield, NC) -- The Johnston County School Board is naming a new interim superintendent. The board announced Monday night that Ben Williams will serve as superintendent through the end of the current school year. Williams is following former interim superintendent Jim Causby who unexpectedly resigned Friday over what he called interference from the school board. Williams was an area assistant superintendent in Johnston County and has served the school system as a teacher, assistant principal, and principal and is a Johnson County native and a graduate of North Johnston High School.

Sampson County Storm Damage Sends 3 Students To Hospital

(Clinton, NC) -- A powerful storm that tore into Sampson County landed three students in the hospital as it heavily damaged Union Intermediate School in Clinton. The storm hit around 2 p.m. Monday, blowing off the back part of the gym and partially collapsing the roof. School authorities say the students have minor injuries and are recovering. Around two-dozen students were having class in the gym when the storm slammed into the school.

(Undated) -- UNC-Chapel Hill and NC State have some of the best online programs in the nation. The latest rankings by U.S. News lists UNC-Chapel Hill's online master of business administration program Number-One. NC State's online civil engineering program ranks 2nd in the nation, electrical engineering is 5th, mechanical engineering 6th, and industrial engineering is 7th. NC State's online graduate engineering program is 7th overall and 6th for veterans.

(Undated) -- Duke slips to Number 3 in the latest men's college basketball coaches poll. The Blue Devils are seven points below new Number 3 Baylor. Gonzaga holds onto the Number 1 spot. The 15-1 Blue Devils are less than 20 points behind the top-ranked Bulldogs.

(Washington, DC) -- The Hurricanes' three-game winning streak is over after a pair of Alex Ovechkin goals in the first period led the Capitals to a 2-0 win in Washington Monday night. Petr Mrazek saved 28 of 30 shots. The 'Canes play the Blue Jackets in Columbus on Thursday.

Man Run Over By Delivery Truck In High Point

(High Point, NC) -- An investigation is underway after a man was run over by a delivery truck in High Point. It happened around 5 a.m. yesterday in the rear parking lot of the Food Lion on Fairfield Road. Police say Michael Jacobs was laying underneath several blankets and had likely fallen asleep under the truck to seek shelter from the rain. Jacobs suffered a severe head injury and was pronounced dead at the scene. No charges are expected to be filed.

Woman Charged After Hitting Davidson Co. Sheriff's Deputy With Vehicle

(Davidson Co., NC) -- A 91-year-old woman is facing charges after she hit a Davidson County sheriff's deputy with her car. Troopers say the deputy was directing traffic outside of Churchland Elementary School, off N.C. 150, yesterday morning when he was hit. Dorothy Walser was charged for failure to reduce speed. The deputy was reportedly alert and talking after the wreck.

Mebane Man Accused Of Raping Child

(Mebane, NC) -- A Mebane man is accused of raping a child under the age of 15. Twenty-eight-year-old Daniel Straughan Junior was arrested following an investigation that launched in mid-August. Alamance County sheriff's deputies say he was sexually involved with the child from 2017 to 2019. Straughan is charged with statutory rape.

City Of Eden Receives $750K Community Development Grant

(Eden, NC) -- The City of Eden is announcing a 750-thousand-dollar community development grant that will help residents fix up their homes. The city's Planning and Inspection Department is putting together a committee that will review and accept applications. Officials say the grant will focus on homes in the Draper community.
