State Health Officials Pinpointing Cause Of Legionnaires' Outbreak

(Fletcher, NC) -- State health officials may have found the culprit behind the Legionnaires' disease outbreak at the Mountain State Fair. Preliminary results reveal a sample from one hot tub exhibit came back positive for Legionella bacteria. Two hot tub vendors set up displays at the Davis Center on the fairgrounds in Fletcher. Samples are pending from another hot tub. A state epidemiologist says people who walked by the hot tubs during the second half of the fair may have been exposed. More than 120 cases have been confirmed.

Former County Manager Reports To Prison

(Buncombe County, NC) -- A former Buncombe County manager is beginning her prison sentence. Wanda Greene reported to a federal medical prison in Fort Worth, Texas this week for a seven-year sentence on bribery and fraud charges. She was diagnosed with breast cancer a few years ago, and recently underwent radiation treatments. U.S. Attorneys say Greene has been assisting investigators in the corruption probe and will testify in the trial of former commissioner Ellen Frost later this year.

Lake With Toxic Algae Closed

(Asheville, NC) -- An Asheville lake is closed due to potentially toxic algae. WLOS-TV is reporting a group of students performed a test last weekend on algae taken from Beaver Lake in north Asheville and it came back positive. State Environmental Quality officials are expected to test more samples today. Anyone who may have come in contact with the water is urged to see a doctor.

Moderate Drought For Most Of WNC

(Undated) -- Most of western North Carolina is experiencing moderate drought conditions. The U.S. Drought Monitor issued its latest findings yesterday. All or parts of nine counties are in a severe drought. A state climate official says the chances of seeing relief are still low at this point. Last month was considered one of the hottest Septembers on record for most of the state.

Two Stabbed In Road Rage Incident

(Hendersonville, NC) -- Hendersonville Police are investigating a road rage incident that turned violent last night. An investigator told WLOS-TV that two people were stabbed on Four Seasons Boulevard. They were rushed to Mission Hospital in Asheville. One suspect is reportedly in custody.

Interim Police Chief Addresses Plans

(Asheville, NC) -- Asheville's interim police chief is looking to make an impact during his expected three-month stay. Robert White said during a Thursday meet-and-greet at City Hall that he plans to focus on training and diversifying the department's staff. The city is hoping to find a replacement for police chief Chris Bailey by December.

Cheerleading Team Taken Off Probation

(Stanly County, NC) -- The state's high school athletic association is lifting probation for a Stanly County cheerleading squad today. The cheerleaders from North Stanly High School came under fire when a picture surfaced of the team holding a Trump 2020 banner during a football game in August. The association initially implemented a season-long probation. The Stanly County district policy prohibits political advertisements at school events. A small group told the school board last night that the girls were exercising their First Amendment rights.

Homicide Investigated Outside Shopping Center

(Charlotte, NC) -- The CMPD is looking for the suspect in a Thursday afternoon homicide in south Charlotte. Officers say a man was found shot to death after an argument outside the Sharon Lakes Retail Plaza. Several witnesses have already been questioned by police. One person told WSOC-TV that a group of nearly three-dozen were gathered at the scene.

Suspect Arrested In Deadly Triple Shooting

(Charlotte, NC) -- The suspect in a deadly triple shooting in southeast Charlotte is in jail. The CMPD says two men were shot to death and another was seriously injured outside an apartment complex on Electra Lane in mid-July. The suspect was arrested yesterday on two counts of murder, among other charges. He's in Mecklenburg County jail with no bond.

World Cup Champs Stop In Charlotte For Victory Tour

(Charlotte, NC) -- The victory tour for the U.S. women's national soccer team is almost over after a match in Charlotte. More than 30-thousand fans filled Bank of America Stadium last night to watch the World Cup champs defeat South Korea two-zip. It was the first time the women's national team played in the Queen City since 2000. The victory tour wraps up Sunday in Chicago.

Four Teens Arrested After Shots Fired, Police Chase

(Charlotte, NC) -- Four teen suspects who led CMPD officers on a chase through Charlotte Wednesday night are facing charges. Officers say they fired 20 shots into cars in the Woodbridge neighborhood in east Charlotte. They reportedly sped off from a traffic stop and led officers on a chase seven miles into South Park until crashing into a SUV. There were no injuries reported. The teens were in a stolen car.

Groundbreaking Held For Tower In Uptown

(Charlotte, NC) -- Construction for a Fortune 100 company headquarters is officially underway in uptown. Governor Roy Cooper joined city leaders for the groundbreaking of a 23-story tower at Legacy Union yesterday. Honeywell will move 750 employees into the headquarters by the time it is completed in two years. The company specializes in production of commercial and consumer products, and engineering services.

100-Degree Thursday Sets 2 Records

(Undated) -- The fall heat wave keeps setting records. Thursday's 100-degree high was the hottest temperature ever recorded in the Triangle in the month of October. It should go without saying that the first 100-degree day at Raleigh-Durham Airport also set a record for the hottest October 3rd. Forecasters say today should top out only in the low 90s and Saturday won't get past the mid-70s.

1 Dead, 2 Wounded In Roxboro Shooting

(Roxboro, NC) -- One man is dead and two others are critically injured after a shooting in Roxboro last night. Police say a 36-year-old man was killed in the shooting around 8:30 p.m. He and the two who were wounded were shot a number of times. Police say investigators are working to learn how many shooters were involved and if the men knew who shot them.

Epic Games Expanding Cary Headquarters, Making Room For 2,000 Employees

(Cary, NC) -- Epic Games is expanding its headquarters campus in Cary and could expand its workforce by thousands. The video game-maker announced Thursday the expansion on more than eight acres next to its existing campus will give it room to add as many as two-thousand more employees. Epic said in a news release it expects development to take three to four years. The maker of industry game-changer Fortnite said construction could begin in 2020.

RDU Adding Security Checkpoints, TSA Agents To Handle Traveler Surge

(Morrisville, NC) -- Raleigh-Durham Airport is adding more security checkpoints to deal with the surge in travelers. CBS17 reports the airport is putting in two new checkpoints in the area where the Panopolis restaurant used to operate. The Transportation Safety Administration has added more than 30 screening agents. Nearly 13-million travelers flew in and out of RDU last year, as the population in the Triangle and the region continues to grow.

Woman Accused Of Selling Daughter To Thomasville Couple For Car

(Thomasville, NC) -- A woman is accused of giving her baby to a Thomasville couple in exchange for a vehicle, and now all three of them are facing charges. Authorities say Alice Todd swapped her child for a 1993 Plymouth Laser in 2018. They became aware of the situation this week when the two-year-old girl was brought to a hospital with bruises. The biological mother and the couple, Tina Chavis and Vicencio Romero, were arrested without incident.

This after nearly 120 people contacted the bacterial pneumonia at the North Carolina Mountain State Fair last month. One fair-goer died. Legionnaires' disease is spread through mist or water. Dixie Classic Fair organizers say banning mist fans and getting rid of the fairgrounds decorative water fountains are just a few of the steps they're taking to prevent a possible outbreak.

Greenville Man Wins $750K Lawsuit Against Wife's Mister

(Greenville, NC) -- A Greenville man is the winner of a 750-thousand-dollar lawsuit filed against the man who his wife had an affair with. Kevin Howard said the plaintiff seduced his wife and eventually destroyed their marriage. WNCN reports the man was found legally responsible for the divorce. North Carolina is one of a handful of states where lawsuits can be brought against people who intentionally interfere in a marriage.

Suspect ID'd In Burlington Homicide

(Burlington, NC) -- Burlington police are identifying the man who they believe is responsible for a deadly shooting in the city. Twenty-six-year-old Miktu Williams is wanted on suspicion of first-degree murder. Police say he shot Donald Watlington in the back late Monday night. The victim was found dead on the sidewalk between two apartment buildings. Anyone with information is urged to come forward.

Child Hit By Car In Winston-Salem

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- A ten-year-old boy is recovering after he was hit by a car in Winston-Salem. It happened yesterday morning at the intersection of New Walkertown Road and Ferrell Court. Police say the child was hit by a Subaru Outback. He was not seriously hurt. There's no word on whether the driver will face charges.
