(Haywood County, NC) -- Investigators are now calling an infant's death in Haywood County a homicide. The ten-month-old died last Thursday night at Mission Hospital in Asheville after being rushed from a home in the Jonathan Creek community. The mother's boyfriend claims the child fell out of her crib. No charges have been filed in connection to the death at this time.

Four-Wheeler Driver Shot To Death

(Burke County, NC) -- The shooting death of a man riding a four-wheeler is being investigated in Burke County. The suspect told WSOC-TV that he shot the man to protect the driver from hurting others. One person who called 911 early Monday morning said the man ran over two people of Old North Carolina 18 in Connelly Springs. The alleged gunman was arrested and is in jail with no bond.

Stomach Illness Affects Almost Three Dozen In Boone

(Boone, NC) -- Health officials are looking into a gastrointestinal illness that broke out at a fundraiser in Boone on Friday. The Watauga Democrat says nearly three dozen people have fallen ill since attending the Masonic Snow Lodge Barbecue. AppHealthCare has encouraged anyone who still has food from the event to throw it away. They're still trying to figure out the exact source of the sickness.

Man Arrested While Swimming From Police

(Lake Lure, NC) -- A forgery suspect who tried swimming away from police in Lake Lure is in jail. U.S. Marshals and Lake Lure police were attempting to arrest Jessie Boyd on Saturday near the Geneva Riverside Tiki Bar when he ran away on foot. Boyd allegedly hopped into the lake, but was caught after officers positioned themselves along the Memorial Highway Bridge and the banks below. He was wanted on nearly 20 felony warrants.

Memorial Service Tonight For Tryon Fire Chief

(Polk County, NC) -- A memorial service is coming up tonight for Tryon's fire chief. Geoffrey Tenant died on Friday at the age of 79. He also served as the chairman of the Polk County Board of Education for over 20 years. The service begins at 6 p.m. inside the auditorium at Polk County High School.

Asheville Sinkhole Gains Popularity On Facebook

(Asheville, NC) -- A sinkhole in Asheville is gaining popularity on Facebook. Over 17-hundred people are now following a group dedicated to the crater that recently opened up in a parking lot on Merrimon Avenue. The growing number of daily posts include memes, paintings and photoshopped images. The large hole has already been filled in and since re-opened.

City Council Condemns Trump Remarks

(Charlotte, NC) -- The Charlotte City Council is condemning what it calls President Trump's racist and xenophobic comments. They approved a resolution last night along party lines by a count of nine-to-two. It comes in response to a Trump rally held in Greenville last week. Charlotte is still set to host the Republican National Convention in August 2020.

State Trooper Seriously Injured During Charlotte Chase

(Charlotte, NC) -- A state trooper who crashed during a chase in Charlotte yesterday is in the hospital with serious injuries. The CMPD says Trooper Christopher Wooten was trying to pull over a late 1990s model Toyota Avalon with a missing hood. Wooten's motorcycle hit a pick-up truck at the intersection of Edgewood and Tuckaseegee roads. The driver of the truck stayed at the scene and wasn't injured. Wooten was last said to be in critical condition.

Teen Dies In Jet Ski Crash

(Iredell County, NC) -- Another death is being reported on Lake Norman. WBTV says a teenager died after two jet skis crashed on Sunday afternoon. It came one day after a man who jumped from a pontoon boat drowned. Iredell County investigators also say two boats collided on the lake Friday night, but no one was seriously injured.

Canadian Police Seek Person Of Interest In Charlotte Woman's Murder

(Charlotte, NC) -- Police in Canada are now looking for a person of interest in connection to the death of a Charlotte woman. Chynna Deese and her boyfriend were found shot to death along a highway in British Columbia on July 15th. The couple was on a road trip at the time of the murders. Investigators say the person of interest isn't a suspect, but someone who spoke with them earlier on the day of the crime.

Suspect Arrested After Allegedly Shooting Bus Driver

(Charlotte, NC) -- One man is in jail for allegedly shooting a bus driver in uptown on Monday. TB Moss is accused of opening fire on the Charlotte Area Transit System driver while passengers were boarding at the transit center just before 1 p.m. The woman was seriously injured. Moss was arrested for multiple charges including attempted murder.

Peace Street Ramp To N. Capital Blvd. Closed Until October

(Raleigh, NC) -- A major detour near downtown Raleigh begins at 6 a.m. today. The ramp from Peace Street to northbound Capital Boulevard will be closed for the next three months. Crews will be demolishing the ramp and building a new one. From now into October, drivers will have to use alternative routes from downtown, like McDowell Street north, which turns into Capital Boulevard.

Raleigh Police Searching For Murder Victims As Suspects Appear In Court

(Raleigh, NC) -- Raleigh Police are searching for the bodies of two murder victims who have been missing for nearly a week. The murdered men's families pleaded for help finding their bodies yesterday. Twenty-three-year-old Brendan Hurley and 21-year-old Anthony McCall were reported missing last Wednesday. Suspects Ryan Veach and James Daishawn Robinson made their first court appearances on Monday.

At Least 31 Arrested In Fayetteville-Based Cigarette Smuggling Ring

(Undated) -- More than two-dozen people are under arrest after local and federal authorities broke up what they call a multi-million dollar cigarette-smuggling ring based in Fayetteville. The U.S. Attorney's office says people running the ring made more than 12-million dollars in profits. A federal indictment accuses at least 31 suspects of buying cigarettes in bulk from wholesaler FreeCo in Cumberland County, then re-selling them illegally in New York. The operation is being called one of the largest multi-state crime organizations on the East Coast.

Teens, 6-Year-Old Accused Of Wilson Gun Store Break-In

(Wilson, NC) -- Police in Wilson say three teenagers and a six-year-old broke in to a gun store, stole firearms, and got away in a stolen pickup truck. Officers responded to an alarm at Dunham's Sports in the early morning hours last Tuesday. They found two shattered glass doors and ten handguns were missing. A 16-year-old, two 14-year olds, and a six-year-old are accused of breaking in and stealing the guns, which have all been recovered.

Dozens To Lose Jobs At Local Nonprofit

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- New policies at the Department of Veterans Affairs will lead to layoffs at a local nonprofit that employs the blind and the visually impaired. And, officials say more layoffs at IFB Solutions are coming. The cuts are the result of new federal guidelines that give priority to veterans-owned nonprofits over AiblityOne nonprofits, such as IFB Solutions. Officials from the nonprofit are meeting with lawmakers in Washington this week to discuss the changes.

Police Identify Man Killed By Train In Weekend Accident

(Greensboro, NC) -- Police say a man who was struck and killed by a train Sunday night has been identified as 39-year-old Cedric Jovan Stokes of Greensboro. Police answered a call about a person hit by a train on tracks that run along East Market Street between Holts Chapel Road and Pine Street. Police are still investigating why Stokes was on the tracks in the first place.

Police, Others Help Find 16-Year-Old Boy

(Clemmons, NC) -- It took a lot of police officers, a K-9, a helicopter and a drone to find a 16-year-old boy who went missing Sunday night. Kendrick Adam Penner was last seen Sunday night on Amberley Lane in Clemmons. Penner has a cognitive impairment and his family was especially worried about his survival in the heat. The Forsyth County Sheriff's Department found him about a mile from home, safe and unharmed.

Trust Fund Set Up In Honor Of North Carolina Zoo Employee

(Asheboro. NC) -- The North Carolina Zoological Society has set up a trust fund for the daughter of a North Carolina Zoo employee who was killed last week. Branson Langley was an arborist for the zoo when he fell nearly 30 feet during a training exercise. The trust fund will provide support for his nine-year-old daughter, Maggie.

Krispy Kreme Takes Wraps Off New Store Design

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- Officials with Krispy Kreme, based in Winston-Salem, have unveiled the first comprehensive redesign of the company's stores in more than a decade. The new stores offer new menu choices, including glazed doughnut ice cream. The first area store just opened in Concord and is one of 45 nationwide.
