(Transylvania County, NC) -- A man who nearly drowned at DuPont State Forest in Transylvania County is in the hospital. Witnesses told WLOS-TV that he started convulsing and went under after he waded into the water at Hooker Falls yesterday. Several people helped keep him alive with CPR until first responders arrived. There was no word of his condition late last night.

Tryon Fire Chief Dies

(Tryon, NC) -- A western North Carolina community is mourning the loss of its fire chief. Chief Geoffrey Tennant of the Tryon Fire Department died on Friday at the age of 79. He also served as the chair of the Polk County Board of Education. The school district released a statement saying Tennant's dedication to students and the community will never be able to be fully measured or adequately expressed.

Infant Dead In Haywood County Considered Suspicious

(Haywood County, NC) -- Haywood County investigators are piecing together details in the death of a infant. A ten-month-old was rushed to the hospital on Thursday afternoon from a home in the Jonathan Creek community. The child was pronounced dead later that night. WLOS-TV is reporting law enforcement saw injuries on the infant.

Two Dead In Head-On Wreck

(Fairview, NC) -- The highway patrol is investigating a wreck that killed two people in Buncombe County on Friday. Troopers say an SUV crossed the center line on U.S. 74A near Fairview and slammed head-on into another car. Both drivers were killed in the accident. Investigators are still trying to figure out why the SUV driver ran into the opposite lane.

Water Main Break Causes Water Problems In Canton

(Canton, NC) -- The town of Canton in Haywood County is dealing with some water problems. A boil advisory was issued yesterday after a water main busted. Town officials also urged everyone to conserve water because of a reduction in the reservoir's water supply. Crews were scheduled to have the main repaired by last night, but there's no indication on when the boil advisory will be lifted.

Governor Signs Bill For New State Park

(Candler, NC) -- The creation of Pisgah View State Park is now official. Governor Roy Cooper said last week that he signed the bill to authorize the park, which lies on land in Buncombe and Haywood counties. He also signed authorization for two state trails in western North Carolina.

Charlotte Woman, Boyfriend Murdered In Canada

(Charlotte, NC) -- Canadian police are investigating the murder of a Charlotte woman and her boyfriend. The family of Chynna Deese says the 24-year-old and Lucas Fowler of Australia were on a road trip in British Columbia. The pair was found shot to death on the side of a highway a week ago. Investigators are still trying to find out if this was a targeted killing or a random act.

CMS Superintendent To Resign

(Charlotte, NC) -- Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools is dealing with another change of leadership at the very top. The school board announced on Friday that Dr. Clayton Wilcox will resign on August 2nd. The news came just days after the board announced it had suspended Wilcox. No details have been given on the exact reasoning behind the resignation. WBTV is reporting there have been five superintendents in the district over the past decade. Community engagement chief Earnest Winston is serving as acting superintendent.

Man Drowns On Lake Norman

(Lake Norman, NC) -- Iredell County deputies say a man drowned on Lake Norman Saturday. The man reportedly jumped off a pontoon boat near the picnic grounds and never came back up. His body was found about five hours after he jumped in.

Concord Police Look For Shooting Suspect

(Concord, NC) -- Concord Police are looking for a suspect in a Sunday shooting. One person was taken to the hospital from a home on Ramsgate Drive with serious injuries. WSOC-TV says investigators were searching woods behind the home, but no suspect has been found. Officers believe the victim and suspect knew each other.

Chesterfield Deputies Investigate Suspicious Death

(Chesterfield County, SC) -- Deputies are investigating the death of a 74-year-old man in Chesterfield County. The sheriff's office says Beckham Miller was found dead in the town of Jefferson yesterday. His death is considered suspicious. There's no word at this time on how investigators believe Miller died.

"Miracle On The Hudson" Plane Temporarily Going Into Storage

(Charlotte, NC) -- A famous plane is going into storage, at least temporarily. The jet known as "The Miracle on the Hudson" is being moved while the museum where it's on display finds a new home. As a result, staff at the Carolinas Aviation Museum in Charlotte have to disassemble the Airbus A-320. It gained fame in 2009 when Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger helped land the plane on New York City's Hudson River after a bird strike disabled its engines. The museum's current location on airport property is being repurposed, but the aircraft will be stored elsewhere on airport property.

Cooler Weather On The Way

WakeMed Treating More Patients For Heat-Related Illnesses

(Raleigh, NC) -- WakeMed is busy treating people for heat-related illnesses. Doctors at the Raleigh hospital say they've treated 16 people because of the heat over the past nine days. WakeMed doctors say prevention is the best way to avoid getting sick from the heat. They recommend staying indoors, drinking plenty of fluids, checking on children and older adults, and not leaving kids alone in cars.

Durham, Fayetteville Motorcycle Crashes Kill 2

(Undated) -- Two people are dead after motorcycle crashes in Durham and Fayetteville on Sunday. A woman riding a motorcycle was killed in a crash in Fayetteville around 2:30 p.m. About three hours later, a 30-year-old man was killed when his bike collided with a pickup truck. Durham Police said last night the motorcyle's speed was a factor in the crash.

U.S. 401 Reopens 6 Weeks Ahead Of Schedule

(Rolesville, NC) -- A stretch of U.S. 401 that broke up and washed out during last month's heavy rains is open again, six weeks ahead of schedule. The Little River washed away two sections of pavement, just south of NC-98, in early June. NCDOT estimated then that repairs wouldn't be completed until the last day of August. U.S. 401 reopened Friday afternoon.

Eden Man Charged In Shooting, Kidnapping

(Eden. NC) -- Rockingham County Sheriff's deputies have arrested a man in connection with several crimes this last week. Thirty-seven-year-old Jesse Edwards of Eden is in custody and charged with kidnapping a man and shooting a woman in Rockingham County. He's also charged with other outstanding warrants in connection with those crimes. Edwards was the subject of a manhunt along the North Carolina and Virginia borders. He's being held on three-million dollars bond.

Remains Believed to be Surry County Man Missing Since Last Year

(Lowgap, NC) -- A suspect in the disappearance of a Surry County man who went missing last August has been charged with his murder. Surry County Sheriff's deputies arrested 47-year-old Javier Gonzalez Garcia after they say they discovered human remains on his property in Lowgap. The remains are believed to be those of 35-year-old Michael Dean Martin, who went missing last August. Garcia is being held without bond. Family members say the two men knew each other well and had worked together the last couple of years installing carpets.

Heat Ending As Cooler Temperatures Move Into Region

McLeansville Man Turns Himself In For Fatal Hit-And-Run

(Greensboro. NC) -- Police in Greensboro say a 28-year-old McLeansville man turned himself in this weekend for the fatal hit-and-run of a motorcyclist Friday morning. Justin Franklin Marshall Covington is charged with felony hit-and-run in the death of 43-year-old Joseph Danny Brown. Police say Brown was riding his motorcycle on McDonnell Road at South English Street when he collided with a car that failed to stop at a traffic signal. Covington is being held on 100-thousand dollars bond.

Construction Work Forces Closure Of Part Of Eckerson Road

(Greensboro, NC) -- Work to replace part of a drainage pipe will force the closure of part of Eckerson Road, beginning today. Eckerson Road at Hicone Road will close today beginning at 9 a-m. It should reopen on the afternoon of August 9th.
