Brevard Man Arrested For Leaving Deadly Wreck

(Hendersonville, NC) -- A Brevard man is facing second-degree murder charges in a deadly wreck in Hendersonville. A 62-year-old woman was hit and killed by a car on Main Street in downtown last Wednesday. The driver left the scene without stopping. The suspect turned himself in to Hendersonville Police yesterday.

Death Penalty Trial Expected To Start Soon In Buncombe County

(Asheville, NC) -- The trial of an Asheville man accused of killing a woman and her unborn child could start soon. WLOS-TV says jury selection that started two weeks ago is reportedly winding down in the case against Nathaniel Dixon. Investigators say Dixon gunned down the woman in a north Asheville park three years ago. The state is seeking the death penalty.

Three Robbery Suspects Tracked Down In Asheville

(Fairview, NC) -- Three suspects are accused of robbing a Hendersonville Verizon Wireless store. Police caught up with the suspected getaway car in the Oakley community of Asheville a few hours after the robbery yesterday morning. The trio was arrested after trying to run away on foot. Nearby Oakley Elementary School was placed on lockdown during the investigation.

Elderly Man Safe After Fire

(Black Mountain, NC) -- An elderly man is safe after a close call in a home fire in Buncombe County. Swannanoa fire investigators say a shed that caught fire on Edwards Avenue yesterday started to spread to a home where a 92-year-old man was sitting on the front porch. Neighbors told WLOS-TV that they helped a Buncombe County deputy save the unsuspecting man from the porch and get him safely away from the scene. The shed was destroyed, but damage to the house was minimal.

Suspect Arrested For Beating Disabled Man With Skillet

(Asheville, NC) -- An Asheville man is accused of beating a disabled man with an iron skillet. Court documents reveal that Joshua Robinson allegedly hit the victim in the head, arms and legs on Saturday. He has since been arrested for assault with a deadly weapon and assault of an individual with a disability. It's unclear how the victim is doing.

UNC Charlotte Student Records Best Time In Cycling Event

(Marion, NC) -- The Assault on Mount Mitchell is over, with a cyclist from UNC Charlotte recording the best time. The Hendersonville Times-News is reporting 18-year-old Seth Jones completed the 100-mile trek in just over five hours and 13 minutes yesterday. The annual event featured over 900 riders biking their way from Spartanburg into western North Carolina. Some stopped in Marion, while others made the ascent to the top of the mountain.

Missing Boater Found Dead In Catawba River

(Gaston County, NC) -- North Carolina Wildlife officials are confirming that the body of a missing boater was found on the Catawba River in Gaston County yesterday. A boat carrying four people around the Kevin Lofton Boat Landing in Belmont reportedly capsized as they were trying to make it back from an island in the river around 4:30 a.m. Three passengers made it safely to land. The body was recovered later in the afternoon.

UNC Charlotte Students Urge Officials To Tackle Gun Violence

(Charlotte, NC) -- Students of UNC Charlotte are urging local leaders to address gun violence. Some of them gathered at a news conference yesterday outside Charlotte-Mecklenburg's government center in uptown to express concerns that some officials aren't responding to take action. WSOC-TV is reporting that Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles is expecting to meet with students later this week. A survivor of last month's campus shooting says she's a little angry that some elected officials aren't doing anything.

Lawmakers Pass Changes To Panthers Incentive Bill

(Columbia, SC) -- South Carolina lawmakers are moving forward with a tax incentive bill for the Carolina Panthers. Both the state House and Senate yesterday passed the bill after a few small changes were made in the proposal. The bill would give the Panthers roughly 120-million-dollars in tax breaks to move team headquarters and its practice facility into South Carolina. Owner David Tepper is eying land just outside Rock Hill.

Fire Tears Through Downtown Mooresville Home

(Mooresville, NC) -- Fire officials are investigating that cause of a blaze that tore through a home in downtown Mooresville. Engines rushed out to the two-story structure on South Main Street a little before 4:30 Tuesday afternoon. No one was reported injured. The home looks like it suffered extensive damage.

Neighboring Businesses Robbed In North Charlotte

(Charlotte, NC) -- The CMPD is investigating a pair of crimes at neighboring businesses in north Charlotte. Investigators say a suspect attempted to rob the McDonald's on Old Sugar Creek Road last night. They believe the same person went next door to a Circle K gas station and robbed the store at gunpoint. No arrests have been announced.

Vice President Stops In Charlotte Tomorrow

(Charlotte, NC) -- The vice president is stopping in Charlotte during a tour of North Carolina tomorrow. Mike Pence is expected to attend a host committee event for the 2020 Republican National Convention, which will be held in the Queen City in August 2020. Young Boy Accused Of Crashing Into Apartment

(Durham, NC) -- A Durham boy is accused of crashing into an apartment complex. Police say yesterday afternoon, a 13-year-old boy stepped on the gas instead of the brake and plowed into a unit at the Bay Creek Apartments. He lives in the apartment he hit, and his mother was injured when the SUV he was driving went through the wall and hit a couch. She was taken to urgent care, but is expected to recover. The teen will not be charged.

Warrant Out For STAYUMBL Driver's Arrest

(Durham Co., NC) -- Police are looking for the notorious Durham driver with license plates that read STAYUMBL. This week, a warrant was issued for Diana Mems' arrest after she didn't show up to court for traffic violations. Mems is known for driving wildly on the road and has been connected to more than 30 traffic violations since the year 2000. This is the second time she has missed a court appearance this month.

Wake County Taxpayers Upset About Proposed 10 Percent Tax Hike

SBI Investigate Cop Involved Shooting That Killed A Vet

(Raleigh, NC) -- The state Bureau of Investigation is looking into a Raleigh police-involved shooting. They say on Sunday, a cop shot 40-year-old Michael Hendricks Junior who had a knife at an apartment on Neuse Road. The 9-1-1 call that police were responding to warned them that he was a military veteran having a flashback. Investigators are looking into the shooting and are going to report the findings to the district attorney.

Police Look For Neighborhood Flasher

(Raleigh, NC) -- Police are looking into reports of a man exposing himself in a Raleigh neighborhood. They say this happened yesterday morning along Wakefield Plantation Drive. The intersection where it happened has a school bus stop. No arrests have been made, but a post online says the suspect was wearing a gray hoodie and sunglasses.

Former UNC Student Dies After Water Rescue

(Durham, NC) -- Durham police are identifying a former UNC student who died after a water rescue. They say last week, 20-year-old Kareem Jenkins was swimming in the Eno River when police got a distress call. He was taken to the hospital, but later died. School officials say he had been a UNC student through April. It isn't known how or why Jenkins died, and his death remains under investigation.

Three People Killed In Surry Co. Fire

(Surry Co., NC) -- Three people are dead after an apartment fire in Surry County. It broke out early yesterday morning at College Place Apartments on South Main Street. The victims are identified as Ryan Gwyn, Makaila Moses and Katherine Woods. There's no word yet on what caused the fire.

Greensboro Couple Killed In House Fire

(Greensboro, NC) -- Fire officials in Greensboro are investigating the cause of a deadly house fire. It erupted Sunday on Elmwood Terrace. An elderly couple, identified as Bill and Hughlene Frank, were killed. Officials say the home was so badly damaged that it will be hard for them to pin-point a cause.

Deputy-Involved Shooting Under Investigation In Randolph Co.

(Randolph Co., NC) -- A knife-welding man is dead after a standoff with Randolph County deputies. The scene unfolded early yesterday morning at a home in the Archdale area. Deputies were responding to reports of domestic assault. Carlos Santiago, who was armed with a knife, was shot and killed. Sheriff's officials say the deputy's life was in jeopardy. The SBI is investigating.

Winston-Salem Daycare Shuts Down After Children Wonder Into Street

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- A church daycare in Winston-Salem is shutting down after several children wondered into a busy street. Pinedale Christian Church is closing its doors on June 11th, roughly six months after six toddlers wondered away from the preschool and onto Peters Creek Parkway. Two teachers of the facility were disciplined. .

Motorcyclist Killed In Deadly Crash In Greensboro

(Greensboro, NC) -- A motorcyclist is dead after a multi-vehicle wreck in Greensboro. Police say the 60-year-old victim was riding his Triumph motorcycle south on US 220 Saturday night when he lost control. Police say he was thrown off the bike and hit by two other vehicles. They say speed was a factor in the wreck.
