Asheville police terminate officer after use of force investigation

The Asheville Police Department has fired a senior police officer who had been on investigative suspension over a use of force complaint from a February incident.

According to Asheville police, Senior Police Officer Anthony Sorangelo's employment with APD was terminated Friday, Sept. 25.

A news release from APD said that on Feb. 11, 2020, Sorangelo and several other officers responded to reports of an intoxicated man lying on Hendersonville Road. The release said that while officers attempted to arrest the intoxicated man, he became "agitated and combative" while officer Sorangelo was assisting him into a patrol vehicle.
